Getting started and frequently asked questions

The interface follows your Mac's language (English or Chinese); change it in Settings → General → Interface language.

Getting started

  1. Install from GitHub Releases or with brew install --cask zhitongblog/tap/hushpiece.
  2. Open Hushpiece and follow the setup guide: choose what you speak and what they speak, download the models, and allow Microphone and Screen & System Audio Recording.
  3. In a meeting, click the waveform icon in the menu bar → Start Interpreting. The subtitle panel appears at the bottom of the screen; drag or resize it as you like.
  4. When you are done, click End at the panel's top right. The transcript is saved automatically (menu bar → Meeting Transcripts).

Frequently asked questions

No subtitles appear

Make sure Hushpiece is enabled in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording, then quit and reopen the app. When the top-left of the panel reads "Listening" and the dot turns green as they speak, audio is coming through.

A purple recording icon appears in the menu bar — is that normal?

Yes. macOS shows it whenever an app reads system audio. Don't click its Stop; if you do, Hushpiece reconnects within about a second.

How can the other side hear my translation?

You need a virtual audio device, chosen as the microphone in your meeting app — for example the free BlackHole: brew install --cask blackhole-2ch, then pick "BlackHole 2ch" as the meeting app's microphone. Hushpiece then sends your own voice and the spoken translation through it, and only speaks while a meeting app is actually using it. Without one, the translation is shown on the right of the panel for you to read out or paste into the chat.

Without headphones, will it mistake their voice for mine?

On speakers, Hushpiece pauses recognising your microphone while the other side is talking (echo guard), and turns that off automatically when it detects headphones. Headphones give the most complete recognition when people talk over each other.

Which languages are supported?

Chinese (Mandarin, Taiwan), English (UK, US, Australia, India), Japanese, Korean, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese — any pair. macOS downloads each language's model once, on first use.

The translation isn't quite right

Hushpiece uses macOS's on-device translation, which handles everyday business conversation well but can be stiff with names and slang. Confirm important numbers and decisions out loud.

Does it go online? Where does the meeting go?

It doesn't go online and uploads nothing. See the privacy policy.

The subtitle panel disappeared

Click the waveform icon in the menu bar → Show Subtitles. The "—" button on the panel only hides it; interpreting continues.
